Braided Cable Hat (Child Large/Adult Small)

I saw someone on ravelry.com wanting to make the Braided Cable Hat but it was too large, and I thought, "Hey, why not make another size?". So here is the child large/adult small Braided Cable Hat. Happy crocheting!

Braided Cable Hat
Size: large child, small adult (19"-21")
Materials needed:
worsted weight yarn: approx. 3.5-4oz.
6mm/J and 4mm/G hooks
yarn needle
Gauge: 13dc = 4" with 6mm/J hook
Skill level: Intermediate
Stitches: Dc - double crochet, fpdc - front post double crochet
Note: Rnds 2-10, 1st fpdc is in fpdc that you joined sl st in of previous row, pretend the ch2 isn't there, it just makes the join cleaner)

Pattern:
Rnd: 1. 14dc in adj ring, join with sl st. (14)
Rnd: 2. Ch 2, fpdc in every dc, join with sl st to top of 1st fpdc (join this way through the rest of pattern). (14)
Rnd: 3. Ch 2, *2fpdc in each fpdc, dc in space between each fdpc of previous round, rep from * around, join. (42)
Rnd: 4. Ch 2, *fpdc in every fpdc, dc in dc, rep from * around, join. (42)
Rnd: 5. Ch 2, *2fpdc in fpdc, 1fpdc in next fpdc, dc in dc, rep from * around, join. (56)
Rnd: 6. Ch 2, *1fpdc in every fpdc, dc in dc, rep from * around, join. (56)
Rnd: 7. Ch 2, *1fpdc in next 2 fpdc, 2fpdc in next 1 fpdc, dc in dc, rep from * around, join. (70)
Rnd: 8. Ch 2, *1fpdc in every fpdc, dc in dc, rep from * around, join. (70)
Rnd: 9. Ch 2, *fpdc in fpdc, sk next fpdc, fcdc in fpdc, fpdc in skipped fpdc (makes "X"), fpdc in 4th fpdc, dc in dc, rep from * around, join. (70)
Rnd: 10. Ch 2, *fpdc in every fpdc (tip: 2nd fpdc in back fpdc of "X" of previous row, 3rd fpdc in front fpdc of "X" of previous row), dc in dc, rep from * around, join. (70)

Repeat rnds 9 and 10 - 6 times (or to desired length), making sure to end with rnd 10.

Switch to 4mm/G hook:
1. Ch 1, sc around, join. (70)
Finish off, weave ends.

    1. I tested it today and what works best is:
Ch 3, join with slip st to first ch to form loop.
      14 dc in loop.

  2. Just use an adjustable ring aka magic loop. You can search for it on youtube and find a good tutorial!
